What works for me over the decades is to spritz a brandy new mold with brake cleaner, paper towel off any residue, then repeat one more time. I want to clean out the cavities, top of the mold, and under the sprue plate, of any oil or whatever residue. It's ready to cast.
How to use the mold and what it will take to "break it in" might vary and we all have our M&P for that chore.
I leave the last cast ball, slick, or bullet in the mold, allow it to fully cool, then wrap just mold itself tight with Glad Press'n Seal food wrap. This keeps out air, eliminates the need for oiling, and the next day, week, month or year, the unwrapped mold is ready for casting fun without the need to de-oil (brake cleaner) the mold.
