Purchased a Nikon 4.5 - 14 x40mm scope with side focus for my savage muzzleloader. Not impressed. Hunted in snow, fogged up and was unable to see anything out of it. Very limited light transmission. Can anyone tell me with a higher variable scope should I expect darker viewingeven at the lowest power? Is it due to the longer tube? I have a leupold VX 11 3-9 x40mm on my rifle, no comparison.

Higher mag scopes will be darker and have a smaller FOV even at the same powers as lower mag scopes.

my best scope in that power range is a Bushnell Elite 4200
