Made it out for the opener of turkey season today. Hunting a new spot this year. Scouted it twice and although I never saw a bird I did see some sign. Started off cold this morning 33 degrees. There was also a fog in the valley I was hunting. Dawn brought gobbling from three different directions however none of the birds will close to me. The birds to my left stayed in the roost and gobbled the longest due to the fog I believe. Once the birds flew down the gobbling stopped. After almost 2 hours I heard a bird way off to my right but slowly it got closer. Got real close for s bit but hung up in woods behind and to my right above me on ridge. Gobbled a few times them decided to walk parralel behind me at about 35 yards. Somehow I missed! Fortunately I was able to cycle the 870 and get a second shot as he was hustling away. Second time's a charm. This was a state land hunt. 16 pound Jake 4 inch beard. My 30th turkey since 1998. My wife and I are very happy for the meat. Good luck out there everyone and be safe.
