I am always doing this n that with my ML's. Last week i had to unload my T/C Hawken .45, went off like a champ after being loaded for a month. I had used a H4540R sabot with 60 gr of Trip 7 & op wad. Whew wee that sabot was hard too load, had to use my range rod. Bullet was an XTP .400 200 gr tick toter smack down! Evidently the bore on my Hawken was cut with new tool to be that tight. I have not really shot but the one, need to see the accuracy on the target. If its tight group i may get a sizer Die to take the bullet down to a .398

I am going to fess up as this is the modern Forum. I have a Woodsman .50 cal rock sparker that loves Harvester short blk. sabots using Barnes XPB of 200 gr. I have only started fooling with it off my shooting table n sand bag. I got it on 6" x 6" target n shot 4 times using 60 gr of duplex load powder. Have basically a ragged one hole. I have to wait for better weather to do more testing at 50 yds. It has its factory open sights on it

Hey on the other Forum they would want to tar n feather me. Hey I have been shooting 200 gr REALS out of my Scout. If that ain't enough i have also been stuffing some sabots with 200 gr XTP's down the bore, not bad accuracy at 25 yds

That's a great bullet. I used one to take down my biggest whitetail to date. A 200+ pounder with a main frame 10 pt rack. Thru both lungs and he only went 40 yards.
BTW may I ask why your using an op wad with a sabot. I'm curious

It makes for a better seal in the deeper grooves., as the sabot may not hold the gas trying to slip by

Interesting. I would have thought that the wad would impede the sabot's skirt (base) from pressing up against the rifling. My thinking is that the sabot was designed so that the concave base would act like a minieball and expand to seal the gases. Now what I'm thinking is that the wad presses into this recess of the sabot allowing it to push harder against the rifling. I'm going to contact MMP and Harvester and see what they say.

Sounds good, do that please. Also i have the dry wool wads for over the powder sealing n the cardboard ones also. I sure have saw some real tight groups since i started using them ! Oh yeah least i forget i use dry cotton balls as an op wad also

OK So I sent an inquiry to both MMP and Harvester. I didn't get a response from MMP but here is the copy/paste from Harvester:

Hello Clement,
We do not see any reason to use a felt wad if the proper sabot is being used.
Thank you for contacting Harvester ML.

Ok n thanks, also Mr. Alan does not need to use wad if he does not want to. Most likely does not shoot or hunt just makes money. Myself i will keep on using them, i see the accuracy diff with them n without them

Good possibility. Do you use an oversize wad? (I.e. 54 in a 50)
I can't complain about my accuracy with sabots alone but if a wad makes my groups tighter so much the better. I'll have to try it when I get back up north.

No i have not used an over sized wad. I have a Break action sml in a .45. I started with the sabot n bullet. As i extended my yardage my groups opened up. A friend of mine from Ar. Steve White told me to try a dry wool wad over the powder. Soon as i did my groups at 75 yds went from 3" down to 1.5". I suppose i can shoot n test the rest of my years to get 1.5" without the wads. It worked for me in that rifle, so it should work for most others. I have tried the card board .060 & it does not help with that load. Tried them because they were cheaper on cost. They seem to work under my conicals in my .45 Hawken
