Ok. Decided to chrono my Lyman soup cans. The charge is 70 of 3f Swiss, an Ox Yoke 1/8th lubed wad and the 400 grain Lyman is lubed with SPG. They load easily up to the top band, and modest thumb pressure gets it past the crown. Once past, it goes down like a minie.
Of course I had to blow the 3rd shot in the first group... Gave a 10 shot 50 yard group of 1&11/16. The 9, not blown shots, are 1&3/16.
Velocities were EXCELLENT! Shot to shot variations were higher than I'm used to seeing with sabots, but 22 fps is very good for full caliber lead. High round was 1367 fps and low was 1345 fps.
Group sizes were from 1/2 inch to 1& 1/8th. The 2nd and 3rd group overlapped perfectly. Literally hole in hole. I put a piece of paper behind the target for the 2nd and 3rd groups so I could plot them.
I'm amazed with this bullet and load! Ought to pound the snot out of whatever I poke with it.

Thanks!
To think that I have a whopping $270 invested in this superb little rifle, she weighs barely 6 & 1/2 pounds, blows my mind!
An interesting thing about this load is its the first full caliber load I tried! A winner from the get go is never hard to take.
I'm absolutely sold on this rifle, the fixed breech plug design and the 1-38 twist.
If you have a chance to pick up one of these classics, you'd be wise to do so. Tremendous rifle!

Found my .54 caliber Fire Hawk in a Lawton pawnshop. The stock had some dings, the bore and blue was perfect. Price tag said $175.00. Told the owner i might be back to buy the gun. She said, "give me $100 and it's yours". Done deal.

That rifle shoots patched round balls like a laser. Rifle shoots patched round balls and 250 grain SST bullets to the same point of aim at 78 yards. Love that rifle.
