Our day started out like any other day, then turned to ship really quickly.
I was cleaning out bluebird houses for the season and was about 100yds away in the orchard. I heard a hell of a noise, then the screaming of the wife. Thankfully I had the JD Gator and it was a quick trip back to the house. I found her out in the back yard in unimaginable pain and she told me she'd broken her leg.
Now, we have a pack, that anytime ANYONE gets on a ladder, even a step ladder, the other WILL be present to hold said ladder. She broke that too.
It was very obvious there was a lot of damage done and it was pretty much all I could do to get her into the back seat floor of the truck for a trip to the ER.
She wanted to trim a couple pine branches in the back yard and didn't want to wait for me to come back up. Bad decision.
She broke her Patella in 5 different places, her Tibia at the top was broken in pieces and she broke the Fibula. The breaks are so bad, that there's no place anywhere in Northern Michigan capable of repairing all the damage. They had to send her down state by ambulance to a specialist in Ortho in Royal Oak. Because of traffic congestion and a NASCAR race in southern MI, it took them over 5 hours to get her to the hospital. I couldn't follow and it was recommended by all, including the wife that I not attempt the trip.
The nurse I talked with on the phone, who was just outstanding and so helpful, said that she was doing very well and very stable. The nurse made sure that my wife could reach her room phone and I was able to talk with her. She said the trip down was a breeze, as she slept the entire time (pain meds). Ortho docs were reviewing xrays from up here and a couple new ones they took down there. It appears surgery will be tomorrow morning.
They showed me the xrays and I'm guessing that because of the damage, they may end up doing a knee replacement. That would most likely be the best thing possible.
So, its been a perfect ship day here. Changes many things for both of us, but the most important part is that she heal. All the other things will get done when possible.
It only takes a second, one bad decision, and life can change very quickly.
