Since the muzzleloading or firearm deer seasons are already here or fast approaching in most states, I was curious as to what everyone was planning to use for their Savage 10ML-2 deer hunting load?

Please include all of the load details:
1. Bullet manufacturer, type (MZ, XTP, SST, etc.), & weight?
2. Sabot manufacturer and description?
3. Powder manufacturer, type (N110, 5744, etc.), & weight?
4. Primer?
5. What has your average group size been for this load at 100 yards?
6. How high do you have your zero set at 100 yards?

Good luck to everyone on their hunts.

Hornady .452 250 grain XTP
MMP short pedal sabot
44grains of AA5744
Winchester primers
3 shot group all touching
Dead on at 100

42grs, N110,250SST, MMPHPH12, Fed209A, sighted in 1.75 high @ 100yds. One hole all day long! Ron :D

1. 245 Barnes Spitfire (packaged as Knight Red Hot BT)
2. Yellow boat-tail sabot packaged with bullets
3. ___ grains of IMR ______ (sorry, I can't post this info here due to forum constraints)
4. CCI 209M primer
5. Average group = 1.2"
6. Sighted in 1.3 inches high at 100 yards (just because I didn't have enough slugs to adjust it more and still hunt with them)

1. Bullet manufacturer, type (MZ, XTP, SST, etc.), & weight?
Hornady 250gr SST
2. Sabot manufacturer and description?
Harvester short sabot
3. Powder manufacturer, type (N110, 5744, etc.), & weight?
VV N-110 42gr
4. Primer?
CCI
5. What has your average group size been for this load at 100 yards?
Around an inch or less.
6. How high do you have your zero set at 100 yards?
About 3 inches right now. At any rate it's zeroed at 176yds.

VV N110-43 grs.
Hornady 250 gr. SST
MMP-HP12
Winchester 209
Groups @ 100yds you can cover with a nickle. :yeah:

IMR 4759-43 grs.
Hornady 250 grs. SST
MMP-HP12
Winchester 209
Same results as above.

Sighted in 2" high @ 100yds.

I realize we only have a handful of responses, but the results are interesting so far. So far we are definitely seeing a preference for the 250gr. SST by the Savage users. This is interesting since I have often read on this message board that the Sav10ML2 was "designed around 300gr. bullets"

Keep the load info coming.

Is there a discernible difference between the SST and XTP bullets? If so, what is it?? Most of the recommendations I've been reading are centered around the XTP, yet I'm seeing a lot of SST in these posts? :?:

10 ML I
175 grain Devil
supplied sabot
38 grain of 2400
Fed 209A
dead on under 2" group at 200 yards
This is my field rifle, so 300+ yard accuracy is a must.

10 ML II
300 grain XTP mag
Knight sabot
50 grains of RL 7
Winchester 209
dead on 2" group at 100 yards
This is my brush rifle and won't get shot over about 80-90 yards.

I believe the reasons that you are seeing more hunting loads with the SST is that it'll fly better (better BC) than the XTP. The XTP is cheaper to shoot tho! Even tho the Savage was designed around a 300 gr. bullet, the performance on deer has been better with the 250 gr. SST than the 300 grain SST.

I shoot a ML-I (it used modules to hold the primer instead of putting the primer on the bolt face) and my load is:

250 gr. SST
MMP short petal sabot
44 gr. IMR-4759
Wonder Wad between sabot and powder
(it allows easier loading of the subsequent shots)
CCI 209M Primer
Accuracy is < 1" @ 100 Yds., sighted in dead on @ 100 Yds.
MV is 2220 fps or so. The ML-II will have a bit more MV with the same load due to a bit of gas leakage with the modules.
Closest deer shot - 20 feet.
Farthest deer shot - 168 Yds. Neck shot after wounding it @ 120 Yds. That deer bedded down behind a tree after the first shot and peeked out every once in a while. First shot I blew and grazed it's belly, not even breaking the skin, but it blew thru the opposite rear leg, blowing out the knee. I jerked the trigger on the first shot.

On the Russian Boar Hunt last Spring, I used the .458" 300 gr. Barnes "X" bullet with great results. That was with a Stainless ML-II. Sorry, I can't post the load due to board constraints. The shot placement was right where the guide told me to hit 'em, and it dropped in it's tracks. 60 Yds.

We'll call it sufficient!

I chrono'ed the load that was used on that hunt in my ML-I. Now, remember that the load will have less fps than in the ML-II that was used. All that I'll say is  ! It was a tad faster than the Winchester Supreme 300 gr. Failsafe in .375 H&H Mag............ I used a rest similar to the Lead Sled when doing the load work, so recoil wasn't a problem. I never felt the recoil when I shot the pig, but my cousin shot it during the summer. All he said was "Thanks, once was enough."
