That was a very nice video. Thank you.
I have always had to use a wad with smooth sized (Fury) bullets. (wool)I think my hottest planned loads on my 45cal are as follows:
11/59grains of N110/H322 on 275gr Fury smooth sized. I’ll try that load on sabot 250gr Fury too.
58grains of IMR4198 on 275gr Fury smooth sized & sabot 250gr Fury.
62grains of Reloader7 on 275gr Fury smooth sized & sabot 250gr Fury.
I also plan similar loads on similar and on smaller bullets of different brands.
Do you think these loads are too hot, and would they benefit from using wads?
I heard that from Mark Woodman. He recommended the Reloader7 for cold weather.I heard that the imr 4198 is very temperature sensitive in cold weather from a couple of different people..
I fully expect that I’ll also need some sort of wad for good compression. I suppose I’ll just have to try for myselfI have always had to use a wad with smooth sized (Fury) bullets. (wool)
I don’t have any N120 but I’ll definitely try it if I can find it. Thank you!IIRC 58gr of N120 and a 200gr breaks 2700fps. Never had any problems with it but some say its temp sensitive too. 60gr will break 2800fps and right around 34kpsi.
Its not all that bad but yes if you sight in at 60F or more and hunt in 30F you will want to verify your load again before hunting. Realize also if you go up in bullet weight it will be less sensitive too. Bullets like the 240gr Fury with Re7 and 4198 should be really good. Ive seen guys shoot a 200gr then shoot a 240gr and got as good or better fps with the 240gr. That tells you right there you are getting a more efficient load burn.I heard that the imr 4198 is very temperature sensitive in cold weather from a couple of different people..
Thank you!!!I think you will want to be more in the 32-35gr range with a 250gr and see what kind of fps you are getting. My guess is you will be beating BH209 loads and have flawless ignition but im not 100% sure of the pressure.
You have a lot of bench time ahead of you- clear the calendar and of course let the barrel cool down between shots. Please report back with your findings. I use/have used some of the bullets on your list in .50 caliber and the the Furys and Parkers performed best in regard to accuracy, but Parkers have not fared well for me on deer (jacket separation on two shots and the bullets didn't mushroom well). Looking to see how the Furys open up on deer next season. I'm thinking the Furys will give my all-time favorite bullet (300gr Barnes Original Spitzer) a run for its money. I will also be switching from the use of sabots to bullet to bore when my new smokeless build arrives.I have a lot of different bullets to try:
Pittman Aeromax 0.452” 303grain aluminum tip
Speer Jacketed Handgun Bullet 0.451” 300grain soft point
Pittman Accumax 0.452” 278grain aluminum tip
Parker Black Max 0.451” 275grain black tip
Fury Star Tip 2p 0.452” 275grain black tip
Northern Precision Pinpoints 0.452” 270grain
Fury Star Tip 2p 0.452” 250grain black tip
Fury Star Tip MZ 0.402” 250grain open tip
Hornady FTX 0.452” 250grain flex tip
Hornady Interlock 0.452” 245grain soft point
Bear Creek 450 Bushmaster 0.452” 240grain soft point
Fury Star Tip 2p 0.402” 225grain black tip
Hammer Pittman-Hammer 0.408” 253grain
Hammer Shockhammer pure copper 0.452” 221grain open tip
Hornady SST 0.400” 200grain red tip
Woodman Arms pure copper 0.402” 175grain open tip
