Do any of you mountaineer owners use anything other than the retaining spring for securing your ramrod? Mine is extremely tight with and too loose without

One thing you might try before doing anything is make sure what might be causing the problem. First remove the spring and screw attachment holding the spring in place and then insert the ram rod. If it goes down smoothly, which it probably will. Then put the screw attachment back in place and try it. If the rod is now difficult to install you now probably now know the real culprit of your problem. From there you will be able to decide for sure your next step. You will probably need to inlet the screw port a little deeper to allow the rod to slide across the head of the screw attachment.
