My first try at cow elk with muzzleloader I was using a pure lead 400 gr. QT bullet from PRbullet.com. I It was quartering slightly towards me and I aimed at the point of the shoulder. It cracked the ball of the joint, and split the bullet in two. The cow ran off and made it about 75 yards. Fortunately, 1/2 the bullet went through the lungs and the other 1/2 through the neck. I learned to shoot for the ribs. I was using 150 gr. of 777. Yes, it kicked the shite out of me. I've learned to shoot less powder, and stouter bullets for elk.
I've never had a deer move more than a few feet using 330 gr. QT or 340 gr. Dead Centers, both pure lead.
