Went out today to see if it is absolutely necessary to swab between shots when burning 777 powder, and shooting a 45 caliber bullet in a 45 caliber rifle when ignited by a pistol primer. Had a little hope the pistol primers wouldn't cause a substantial crud ring.
Bullet is the 250g Deep Curl sized down to about 0.4502". Rifle is a 45 caliber Omega with QLA cut off. Load is 95g 777, doubled vegetable fiber wad, 250 Deep Curl, Winchester large pistol primer. The bullet loads easily when rifle is clean. First shot was from cold clean barrel. Cold means cold. It was -21° when the first shot was made. Never turned off the engine. Shot from inside the cab. Target was a quart milk bottle filled with water out 210 yard. Elevation dial was turned up 7 moa. First shot was a miss. Rifle was swabbed with a wet patch before loading the second shot. Could feel a crud ring whilst swabbing. Second shot loaded easily. Second shot was a miss.
Had to drive out to the bottle, and see where the bullets hit. They barely missed on the right. Turned the windage dial 1¼ moa left. Loaded the powder, and wads without swabbing. The bullet had to be pounded down to the powder. The bullet was pounded down to the powder. That hurts; won't be doing that again any time soon. Pistol primer didn't do any better than a 209 primer.
Bullet made a nice neat hole in the bottle front, and split the backside wide open.
