Anyone like the 45-70 ? Todays Range Results

Hi Doohan, actually my barrel is the old style 45-70 Katahdin 18" barrel. It does have the factory break. It's a boomer without doubt, but I have shot it once or twice without muffs... Ridge

Anyone like the 45-70 ? Todays Range Results

Hey Wapiti Wacker, Yes it is ported. I don't believe you can go to 45-70 on the contender frame, but i have read of guys taking a 44 mag contender barrel and having it rechambered to .444 marlin. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with that personally... I'd suggest an encore frame for the bigger...

Anyone like the 45-70 ? Todays Range Results

Thanks Quigleysharps4570, Just an update for those interested... I had a bit of time this afternoon, and tweaked the scope a bit on my 45-70 Encore. The picture is of a 3" sticker disc on a cardboard box, shot from bench, at 100 yards. The 1-1/2" 4 shot group is the result of my getting cocky...

Anyone like the 45-70 ? Todays Range Results

Hi Choc-Dog, I've got to tell you, I was apprehensive about the recoil prior to shooting this gun. However upon shooting it, I was pleasantly surprised by the recoil, removed my hard hat, catcher's mask, and chest protector.  Just kidding... It is totally manageable. I shot the...

Question for the .45 cal smokeless shooters

OK Steve... Now you really have me looking forward to load testing! More velocity, with less pressure . I really like the idea of that! I can hardly wait to see what results I can get with the barnes 195. I picked the barnes 195 for a flat trajectory W/ low recoil, but I'm also thinking the...

Question for the .45 cal smokeless shooters

Steve, Your assumption is absolutely correct. I'm hoping to push a 195 barnes in the neighborhood of 2600 fps from the 28" barrel. I know SB uses 2015 in his .45 28" #1 . That's a bit faster than i really need. Do you see any reason the 4198 would take a back seat to the H-322 or 2015? How...

Question for the .45 cal smokeless shooters

Thanks for the good information Steve. I didn't have specific bullet in mind. Basically, I was trying to gain a better understanding of proper adjustment between .50 & .45 caliber loads. Your help here, and DW's help at Dougs, have cleared things up tremendously. I'm working on a couple...

Question for the .45 cal smokeless shooters

Is pressure increased dramatically when going from a .50 cal barrel to a .45 barrel using the same bullet weight and powder charge. Do you automatically drop your starting loads a prescribed amount to accommodate this? What have you guys experienced? As always, Thanks for your replies, Ridge

What to do with my Encore...

Doegirl, I'd certainly consider a .243 if I were wanting an Ohio Coyote cartridge that I could use for out of state hunting for up to say black bear. .243 is a nice cartridge if you are not a reloader in that you can buy factory varmint rounds that will fragment as opposed to ricocheting. Yet...

Question for the smokeless 45 shooters

RB Writes Rick, Since we're talking a 200gr and 250 gr bullet of .356 dia, I expected you to possibly mention the bullet length either favorably, unfavorably. Do you have an opinion of how the longer bullet might perform from the sabot? Second question for you... When you used the phrase...
