will 44 grains of 5744 and this bullet see 2050 fps(like my XTP does) if so with that velocity it should open out to say 225yrds before it drops below 1600fps so if RW told me right i will be good to 200yrds(if it groups) WOO-HOO

Are you sure your getting 2050 with 44grns of 5744??? My Savages
dont. 1950 fps tops with a 300grn XTP.

Individual guns can easily vary by 100 fps or so. I get right at 2000-2025 fps in two different 10ML-II's.

Are you saying you are clocking that velocity with 44gr 5744 and a 300gr bullet? 2000-2025fps, RIGHT?

To be precise, 45 gr. of 5744 and a 300 gr. jacketed bullet, Federal 209A primers, and a .033" ventliner @ 3 ft from the muzzle. Pure lead always clocks slower than that.

The Savage manual states 2218 fps with 44 gr. 5744 and a 300 gr. SST or XTP, but I have never clocked anywhere near that. Even with a 260 gr. Dead Center, I've never cracked 2100 fps.

If you believe load #61 here: http://www.sav10ml.com/pages/load_data/SAV10ML_Load_tabletop.htm you would believe that 41 gr. 5744 is good for 2110 fps with a 300 gr. XTP.

Not in Illinois it isn't. 5744 has many excellent characteristics, but high velocity just is not one of them.

Please bring said gun to Crossville...I'll have to clock it to believe it..

You really think I'll be shooting a Savage?

I don't really CARE if you're shooting a SLINGSHOT...just bring THAT Savage for a couple of rounds thru the Oehler...

Sounds like an order to me Randy.

Somehow, the world isn't that likely to spin off its axis soon.

Apparently, Al Gore's Internet is infested with an fabulous gathering of liars? Savage10ML-II must be wrong to say he gets 2050 fps w/ 44 gr. 5744, I'm wrong at clocking 2000 - 2025 fps, sav10ml.com must be REALLY off their rocker to publish 41 gr. @ 2110 fps, the Savage manual is naturally absurd to say 44 gr. @ 2218 fps, and who knows what everyone else's chronographs read.

It's a national emergency, the gathering is in Tennessee, and the goal is to find the missing 50 fps between my 10ML-II's and Grouse's? Consumer level chronographs can easily be off that much.

A visit to Sierra bullets might actually help OBTURATE the meaningless controversy:

The difference in 6 in. kill MPBR with the Barnes Original from 1950 - 2000 fps is a whopping four yards. :d'oh!:

And that's not the HALF of it.. Just looking at my notes to see what the highest velocity I've EVER gotten with a 300gr bullet using 5744. That velocity was 1943fps using 46.0gr 5744 and a 300gr XTP. I have NEVER broken 2000fps with a 300gr bullet when using 5744.

Sure..why not..And you can bring the same chronograph!...And while we're at it we'll set up two chronographs and check that bc for the Barnes .458 300gr Original and we'll compare that to the 300gr .452 SST!

LOL!! :poke:

If it is the traveling Chrono quest, might as well fly to Alberta-- and try to find all that extra velocity from three pellet loads that won't work in Alabama. :goodman:

Lets see:
Possible causes of variation of velocity read with same load.
Different Chronos- 50 fps?
Different Rifles- 50-100 fps?
Charge variations and diff. in loading procedure - 50-100 fps?
Atmospheric conditions including temp- 50-100 fps?

Just taking a guess here fellas but it seems to me that there is alot of room for variations in velocity readings from gun to gun, chrono to chrono etc. that could add up in a worse case scenario.

Again, don't know why this is in the advanced forum, this is shooting 101.
