Have deceided to try the 300gr sst's vs the 250gr sst. I had trouble with N110 and 250gr sst but instant success with 4759. Bearing this in mind which powder with the 300gr bullet would you suggest? (primer 209w)

4759
N120
4198(H or imr)

Thanks

N120 at around 60gr seems to be THE powder for 300 gr class bullets.

I've had really good accuracy using 60 grs. N120 and a 300 gr. SST out of a Savage 10ML-II.

If you have either 4759 or VV-110 also try 42g+/- and see what happens also. I shoot 60gs VV-120 with 300SST but may change to 42gs of VV-110 just due to improved accuracy. The only ML-2 at my disposal, one I keep for another person who doesn't use it any more, is quite a bit more accurate with VV-110,42g /300SST than any 55-60g load of VV-120.

SW,
What kind of velocity are you getting with the 42 gr. N110/300 SST combo?

Around 2230'/sec
Well, I guess I'm gonna have to give that combo a try sometime. I've already got a bunch of vials pre-weighed with 42 grs. N110, but I've only shot 250 gr. class bullets with it before. I will give the 300's a whirl next time with the N110, but they'd have to shoot awfully good to outperform the N120 though!

Nic,
Certainly VV-120 is a better selection for 300g bullets, efficiency wise, but the VV-110 has been more accurate for me.

I am wondering is the extra powder and recoil worth the 100 or so extra MV? This could lead to accuracy being improved due to shootability of the user???

I found some N120 locally but want to make sure I am not saddled with another high priced paper weight, as has been the case with N110 in my rifle with 250gr projectiles  .

Thanks for the input

4759 should work with the 300 SST as well but you'll have to adjust your charge up or down, likely down slightly You'll have to experiment to find what your rifle likes, but you likely knew that.
Where did you find the VV120? I saw some a couple of weeks ago at Wholesale sports.

I'd expect N120 or N110 will get the most hits because more people use them but with a 300 grain bullet I haven't seen anything that will out shoot 66 to 70 grains of 10x.

I've also found 64 to 68 grains of Reloader 7 works excellently in some rifles.

RAF, yes it was at WS 79.99 for 2lbs, he said it was the only one in the stock though! The other person who usually has a good stock of VV powders is Doug Rayner in Lancer(generally a little cheaper but logistical problems being out of town).

Thanks for the replies.

I never asked about the price and I'm glad I didn't. Pretty pricey for what might be an experiment. I guess I'll stick with 4759 and keep tipping those deer over

SR-4759 is so user-friendly, that's the one I'd start out with. 42 to 44gr seems to be the sweet-spot in most guns and that's what I'd try. I usually use W-W or CCI 209s. Federal 209As are fine too.

I can get three shots to touch with the 300 grain SST and 38.0 grains of N110 -- all day long. If I push over 38 grains, however, it starts to open up. I'm getting about 2150 MV with this load, and that's a fine hunting load, I think.

RAF, got that right and worse yet when you have one staring at you from the bench that didn't pan out like it was suppose too.

Hookiehunter that is pretty impressive that 38gr will give you less then 100 shy of what they say 43gr will get in MV. I never tried below 40 with N110/250's but will try your suggestion, just may find a use for my paper weight afterall :D !

Thanks again
