I have been thinking about ordering a MGM barrel for my Prohunter in 450 bushmaster. I have also been looking at the Ruger American and CVA Scout in 450 bushmaster. I could buy either one of those 2 cheaper than a barrel for my Prohunter and have a whole gun. Out of the 2 Ruger and CVA witch one shoots better has anybody shot both?

I was also wondering about barrel length. My Hornady reload manual says 2,200fps with the 250gr ftx with a 16in barrel. The CVA has a 23in barrel without the break and the Ruger has a 16in barrel. How much difference would that make in the 450 bushmaster?

I bet that Ruger is a loud sucker with the muzzel brake. The CVA I would probably just take the brake off.

I have not shot both, but member Busta has both. I have the Ruger. Technically there is only 2 Rugers cataloged but there is 3 or 4 versions. Randy's in Bad Ax Michigan might have a few of his dealer exclusives left. I got one of those. Stainless, Black synthetic, 22" barrel with no brake. Randys also had some Blue/Black and a few Ranch in stainless too. The Brakes will screw off and a cap could be put on them. The Ruger "Go Wild" comes with a different Brake than the Ranch and it also has a 22" barrel. With a load of Lil Gun and the 250FTX I get 2330 out of mine at 10' from the muzzle. I like mine quite a bit and harvested a doe with it at 182 yds this past fall in SE Ohio. I have not seen the CVA in Person, but have chatted with Busta and he says his is a shooter. I have no doubt it is. My guess is that the 22" Ruger barrel and the CVA is not that far apart in the FPS range. The 450BM is a real pleasure to shoot too and very accurate. They say they recoil like a 20ga Slug gun but I am not sure that it really has that much recoil. Mine is not that loud but those brakes might make it load, they usually do. I personally did not want one with a brake, just did not think it needed it, and now that I have one for me it did not.

This is mine.

Nice gun, I don’t care for brakes on hunting guns either. I would rather either have a shorter gun or longer barrel. I have a old marlin 444 that was my dad’s before it was mine. It’s been well used and is about ready for retirement in the gun cabinet. That’s why I’m considering the 450 BM as a replacement. I like everything I read about them being so accurate.

I see Mossberg introduced a wood stocked 20in fluted threaded barrel Patriot 450 BM this year too.

Another option is the Bergara 14 HMR in a .450 BM. It's more money, but it's way more rifle. Stock has adjustable LOP and cheek piece, overmolded aluminum chassis. Action is Rem 700 parts compatible. Trigger is already very good, and is adjustable. Barrel is 20" !-24 twist match grade with threaded end for brake if you chose, and most importantly, Bergara accuracy. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have both the Ruger American 16.12" barrel, and CVA Scout V2 23-3/16" barrel. Both came with brakes, and both shoot well. I much prefer the CVA Scout V2. The Ruger is a little heat sensitive.

I had a stainless RAR first from Randy's, but Ruger recalled all the rifles made on that same day. It's a 6 hour round trip to Randy's from my house, so I told Ruger and Randy that they would be buying my 1-1/2 week old rifle back, and I got the blued catalog model with the brake. Randy's credited the difference back to my card. I also ordered the CVA Scout V2 from a local dealer.

Here are some threads I posted on Michigan Sportsman. If you want to know anything about the .450 Bushmaster in any configuration, you will not find a site with more information anywhere.

By now I had already returned the stainless and had the blued version. Timney Trigger Upgrade with pics.

That .450 Bushmaster site doesn't even have a category for tip-up rifles, or MGM, EABCO drop in barrels. Lots of arm chair ex-spurts, parroting what they have "read". It don't impress me much.

The MS Rifle Forum has it all in one forum. From the novice to the ex-spurts.

Facebook has never impressed me.

WPrather, I'd bet either way you go, you'll like the 450 Bushmaster. Its a dandy round and IMO little recoil. A brake isn't needed regardless the rifle brand.
Although the rifle I shoot is a bolt and totally different than any mentioned, the round is a joy to shoot and I'm not into CF shooting anymore. I actually enjoy reloading them. I use the Hornady die set, but I'd like to start depriming without full length resizing. It actually surprised me how accurate the round can be and out to 300yds.

A 250gr bullet at 2250fps aint that bad at all. Shot loads like that in my NULA many times with 42ish grains of powder.

I was mainly just interested in the Ruger American Ranch and CVA Scout because of the price. There both right at 400 bucks, which is what I can order a MGM barrel for my Prohunter.

I want to replace that marlin 444 with a heavy bullet big bore brush gun. I’m only looking for 100yds and under. I have probably 10 bottleneck cartridge deer rifles for deer hunting also. The 3 options I was looking at was 450 BM, 444 marlin and 45/70. The 444 marlin is a great gun but it has the worst bullet choices. The 450 BM has the least recoil and best gun choices. I didn’t realize how many bolt guns was made in this caliber. The 45/70 will out do both and has the best bullet choices. The 450 BM shoots a 250gr bullet 2,200-2,300fps. With the 45/70 in a 24in barrel I can hit 2,500fps with a 300gr and 2800fps with a 250gr. With the strong action loading specs in a single shot and 2,300fps and 2,600fps in a lever gun.

I already have a TC 20in katahdin barrel in 460 S&W. It’s not good for anything but fun in my opinion. The barrel is way to light and short to hold still shooting free handed. But if you want something to play with that blows a fire ball 2-3ft out the end of the barrel. Then it’s great! Lol

I hunt thousands of acres of national forests. There has been a many a times over the years when deer don’t seem to be moving. That the lever action 444 came in handy. I have went out and walked thickets or clear cuts or just big thick hollows and jumped them up. Where a quick follow up shot came in handy. The Ruger American Ranch would probably be good for that. They don’t really make the marlin 444 no more even though it’s still listed. But I guess a marlin 35rem or 45/70 would work also. Haven’t decided on anything yet just weighing options.

Lots of guys building the 450 in the AR platform. That's a quick second shot for ya :)

Thanks for posting the links Busta. I had not found the Timney for the RA yet. I was looking at the pics but could not tell how wide the Trigger shoe is on it. Is it skinny, or wider than the stock trigger? That CVA Definitely is a shooter. I would like to see one of those in person when they release it in the 350L.

Thanks!

I looked at a Bushmaster AR 450 BM last summer. I came really close to buying it. But I talked myself out of it. I’m not really a AR guy it’s just not a hunting gun to me. On a cold 20 degree morning a AR would be like a big cold metal ice cube. The only auto deer rifle I ever liked was the old Remington Woodsmaster 30/06. If Remington could still make them like they used too. I would buy a woodsmaster 30/06 and a gamemaster pump 35rem today.

My dad had a remington woodsmaster 30/06 for years when I was growing up. I think it was the only gun he had he liked more than me. Lol He got rid of it not to long before he died. I didn’t know anything about it or I would still have it.

It’s a shame Remington went from the woodsmaster to the piece of junk they have today.

WP

You can actually buy the Scout V2 for as low as $325, if you shop around. $350 easy.

By the way, it's worth much more than that, but don't tell anybody. :snipe:

ShawnT

You're welcome.

The Timney Trigger shoe is right at 1/4" wide.

Thanks again Busta. That's better than I thought it looked in the pics, but would love to see it just a tad wider. Still see one going in mine later this year, Not crazy about this trigger with the safety piece in the middle either. It works ok, just feels odd to me.
