Hello, new member with question about 209 primers, not new to BP or inline, just to 209 primer. Traded in '97 CVA Apollo for CVA Accura LR and like what I see and how it handles but haven't sighted it in yet. I always like to research things I'm not familiar with so this question, is the o-ring or shims still needed or has CVA solved this issue? I am going with Blackhorn powder, 250 gr Aerolite Powerbelts and W209 primers. I also purchased Federal ML primers not 209A, before I got W209. I measured both primers and the W209 is longer than the Federals. Which would work better without shim or o-ring or do both require it? Does anyone here shoot CVA Accura V2 and don't have blowback? Thanks in advance for all advice.

Welcome aboard. With that rifle and you're already having the w209 Winchester primers, I'd just start with them and see what they say after firing. If they come out clean while shooting you need do nothing at all. If they having some soot on them I'd just slip an o-ring in there and try again. Most often the o-ring is the answer. The other "best" option is to get the fining pin bushing shim kit from the company. Either way the fix for dirty primers is pretty simple with that gun and you'll be more than happy with it.

:welcome: to the group limbhanger. There’s a ton of info for your questions here in the forums. Use the search function at the top of the screen. Search CVA accura blowback, there will be 20 or more threads pop up. Good luck.

Welcome. You might just get lucky on the headspace with a current Blackhorn 209 compatible primer. I would not use the Federal Muzzleloader Primers for Blackhorn 209. They may work in warm moderate temperatures, but will come back to bite you in colder temperatures during seasons. The Win W209, Fed 209A, and CCI 209M (Magnum) primers would all be good choices.

BEFORE all that, you'll need a Blackhorn 209 compatible breech plug, as the OEM was designed for pellets and easier to ignite loose powders, and is not reliable with Blackhorn 209. There are a several options available now for Blackhorn 209.

Several choices for every budget, and beyond.

If you decide to go with the o-ring, give me a holler. I came up with the idea back in the summer of 2008, kept it to myself for several months and through the hunting seasons, then shared it with everyone in January 2009. Was thinking about looking into a patent, but never really researched it. It's all PRIOR ART now, and has been for 11 years. It is very effective, sealing out the elements, and eliminating blowback. Just need to adjust your headspace with your firing pin bushing, just like you will probably have to for a bare primer anyways, unless you like leaky primer pockets.

Go here and read everything. click on all the blue tabs, especially everything under TECHNICAL, LOAD DATA, and FAQ's. It will shorten your learning curve immensely. There are NO shortcuts when shooting Blackhorn 209, so don't try to cut corners, or it will come back to bite you.

And don't be afraid to ask questions here. Several of us have been shooting Blackhorn 209 since it was first commercially available in early April, 2008, 11.5 years ago. Where does time go?

I believe I'm really going to like this site. Sure do appreciate all the info Busta from you and the other gentlemen. I' hope to help others also shorten their learning curve. I bought the BH breech plug from muzzle-loaders same time as other items. I do recommend them for customer service and help. Never tried Blackhorn before (price). I only used percussion before. Thanks again.

Just looked on CVA's Site. Cannot find the firing pin bushing shim kit any longer since they updated to what they call a easier format. Might not sell it any longer?

Yeah I couldn't find them either.

There are other options from McMaster-Carr I believe. You can also get the metric 4.5mm I. D. x 6.5mm O. D. x 1mm thick O-Ring for the primer pocket from them, if you ever decide to go that route.

You may not even need the shim kit anyways. There is an o-ring that goes under the bushing shoulder that will hold the bushing in place. I bought the shim kit several years ago, and never needed it. The o-ring holds the bushing pretty snug, and keeps blowback from migrating into the bushing threads.

Would you like to sell that shim kit Busta?

Sorry, no, at least not yet. The reason being, IF CVA EVER PUTS THE FAST TWIST .45 CAL BARREL on the Accura MR, I'd be forced to buy one. That is when I'd need the shim kit, for sure.

So, the faster you can convince CVA to put that barrel on the MR, the faster I'll know if I can sell it.

I'll get right on it Busta, but I think Trump will give up his tax returns a lot sooner than the .45 fast twist comes about.

The fast twist 1:22 .45 caliber barrel is already on the Paramount and the Accura V2 LR. They just need to put it on the Accura MR, and I guess the Accura PR while they are at it.

I thought about the .45 in the LR but stayed with .50 in case of elk hunt in Colo. Maybe in future.
