How far away when testing loads?

Hey guys, I was just curious when you are testing to see what bullet/sabot/charge works best with your muzzleloader, what range do you typically do it at? Not sighting in, just for finding best groups.

100 yards. Long enough of a distance that I can see what the load is going to do, but not far enough where I’m all over the target and possibly missing completely.

I shoot open/peep sights exclusively with my Muzzleloaders, When i test new Bullets i like to be in the 50 to a Maximum of 100 Yard Range. I shoot more 50-60 Yard range than any, Simply because it’s convenient for me, and it tells me what i need to know. If the load shoots Badly at 50-60 Yards there is no reason to take it farther out, I work with it here until i get it to Shoot tight, Then i take it out to 200-300, if it’s stil holding Tight, i go to 600-800 Yards

I agree with Lewis..50 yards is a great base starting distance. If you get a good group take it out farther..not like it’s gonna get better the farther you go

I primarily shoot at 100 and am usually shooting more than one rifle at a time, alternating guns to allow barrel cool down time. Open sights, I’m gonna start at 50-60

50 yards first 3 shot group. If adjustments need to be made make em. Shoot another 3 at 50. Shoot the rest at 100

Same here. Start at 50 yds. make any adjustments. Shoot at 50 yds. again. Then take her out to 100yds.

I'm going to be different. I start at 25yds till on target then adjust at 50 yds one inch high then 100 yds dead center.
Majority of my shots at deer are within that distance.
If already set up at 100yds.then I will start there to confirm accuracy is still there.

Steve, I do the same thing especially when I install a new scope, peep sight, or whatever especially if you can't boresight the rifle. I always start my grandchildren off at 25 yards as it's easier for them especially with peep or iron sights to get the proper sight picture.
