I'm just starting with this SML thing and I have 2 full canisters of IMR4198 but I've been reading a lot of good things about N120. Am I right in thinking that something like 57-58 gr is a max charge with 250 gr bullets?

I would not go over 58gr of N120 and a 300gr sabotless in a small OD barrel. You are about 42-44kpsi with 58gr sabotless 300gr. Roughly mid to upper 2300fps range. LRMP could be a little more too.

58gr and a 250gr should be no problem at all. Could be a little temp sensitive because it likes some pressure. Its so clean you can probably size the bullets for a clean bore and shoot all day. :D

VV N-120 is a great powder, but so is your IMR 4198. You may get a few more fps using the N-120 and be slightly cleaner burning, but I would use up the IMR 4198 and save the money to buy bullets and primers.

After you use up that 4198, if you can use it in your gun set-up, get some N110.

I finally got around to shooting my gun over a chronograph with n120 last weekend. I'm shooting a 700ml modified sendero , 209, with 26in barrel. Load is 60gr of n120 with 250gr star tip fury bullet to bore that loads snug with a poly wad. My shots were 2685, 2657, 2689, 2686, and 2658.

If your barrel shank is 1.2" or larger for 4-5" that load should be plenty safe. Let me see if i can find the 275gr BE trace.....i may have had one. Just the extra 25gr of bullet weight makes the pressure rise a tad more than you would expect.

I cant find the 60gr/275gr one atm but you can see what i meen by the 300gr trace and the 70gr/275.
