Yeah with our gas and a carburettor 9:1 is about the limit with cast iron heads but you can go to 10,5:1 with aluminium heads.

Suppose your altitude also helps as there is less oxygen than at sea level.
 
I have one of those computers, it tells you #3 cylinder misfire lol. It could even be caused by the mass air flow sensor but you dont know until you replace everything and get lucky at some point.
 
Pete the home mechanic can buy all the stuff needed to fix todays cars but I think plugging a computer into the car to find a fault takes all the fun out of working on a car as you don't need to think or know a lot about engines.

The newer cars pinpoint it much better now.
