Another newbie question. I asked about what bullet to use the other day. What powder/powders should I try in my new Brux barrel when I get it? I will most likely be trying the 275g or 300g NSR bullets. Thanks for all the wisdom so far. Looking to learn as much as I can before the barrel shows up.

Good deal, I have plenty of IMR4198, no N120 and limited amounts of H4198. Plenty of Reloder 7 but I’ll stay away if it’s dirtier. I’ll check my local reloading store and see if they have any N120.

You can do pretty much all you want with either 4198 and the loads are well documented in a variety of platforms. I am however partial to N120 with sabot loads but if you shoot the larger 40s then 4198 or Reloder7 are just fine too.

4198 and Re7 will benefit from bullets like the 240gr Fury vs a 200gr SST. The additional weight helps it burn a bit better. You can basically get a 240gr moving as fast as a 200gr with the same amount of powder or close.

Just imagine a 240gr Fury with a claimed BC around .350 at 2500-2600fps. Thats a heckuva a sabot load and dont take a ton of powder to get there. Wont beat you senseless either. :snipe:

Does the barrel get very dirty shooting sabots through it? I would prefer to shoot bullet to bore, but a sabot load may be a good starting point for me.

Around 56-58gr of 4198 and a 240gr Fury in a Harvester light blue sabot. About the same amount of Re7 or a couple grains more will give around the same speed.

I look at it like this....Thats a 300 yard deer load that dont rock too bad. Re7 is very easy to ignite also. Even though its dirtier than N120 its way cleaner than BH209. To get something sabotless to shoot as flat you are looking at a fair amount more recoil.

I thought i saved it...This is what it looks like on paper with a 150yard sight in. Point and shoot to 200 and hold on the top of the shoulder for 300. :D

I’m gonna jump on and watch this thread. Since I’m gonna have the same barrel as 10acres coming. I’ve stocked up on the fury .401 after watching some of the others posting on Marks barrel.

N110 is for lower velocity loads in general. N120 can break 2700fps no problem with a 200gr. Im really not sure how well the much faster N110 is going to play with a 240gr bullet. Its already stressing a sabot with a 200gr bullet.

What about n110 with heavier bullets? Lets say 300-350gr? Ive been thinking that n110 is too fast for these bullets. Am i wrong?

I really liked N120 with 200gr bullets. Havent tried it with my 240s. I would probably back down from a typical 200gr/58gr load to probably 54-55gr and see how that goes. Thats a 2650-2700fps load with a 200gr. Dont need or really want a 240gr moving quite that fast in a light rifle.
