That is a lot of bullet hanging outside of the sabot. I will have to try them in my 1:22 Pacnor. Would 54 gr of N120 be a good starting point?
Thanks for the great post. I'm thrilled with the sabot loads in my Accura V2. Last yr was my first yr really learning about sabots & shooting them. In out climates I too think for hunting applications that it's the way to go go all the reasons you listed. Getting the right bullet with the right sabot with the right bore tension & the right charge really is a fantastic thing & very accurate. I've only dialed my sabot hunting load in out to 200yds & I'm sure the 1.5" group I shot could be improved upon. I'll send a group or two at 300yds. I am very curious as to the accuracy still holds sub moa.SW,, I've kind of come to a place with all of my smokeless rifles that I hunt with ,,,I will shoot nothing but a light blue sabot 40 cal I'm talking about my 45 Cal rifles that I hunt with ,,I'm shooting some really nice lightweight guns capable of shooting a mild smokeless load, and will put bore riding bullets in a hole,, but I've switched to the light blue Sabot 40 cal bullet in those guns,, it's been easy to find a half inch load in all of the rifles I'm very content with that ,even though I do like guns that shoot a hole. A tight fitting sabot load gives me in my mind a little bit more comfort setting on my powder charge maybe that's just me ,also it seats a little bit more sure to me if that makes sense, gives witness mark a feel and it takes out the possibility of sticking a bullet out in the field I think a follow-up shot is a little bit quicker to me with a Sabot load,, 3 or 4 years ago I think I would have had a different view of that it's funny how as we shoot more things just kind of find their way, habits and what works for me might be different than what works for someone else,,, I hope we see some longer 45-40 sabots one day,, I'd love to shoot some of the 275s 40 cal.
Shot this a couple of weeks back it's 57 grains of h4198 light blue and a 225 pitman,,,sabot junk
In addition to the problem of the bullet too long for the sabot the longer bullets like faster twist. My 1 in 18 gun likes the heavier (longer) bullets much more than my 1 in 22 gun. On myI have not shot n120,, I'm sure others on the site have,, The particular Wilson barrel 1 in 20 450-457 barrel does like the bullets a lot, it also shoots a fury 240 open tip very well 40 cal, I really didn't expect the 240 and the 250 to shoot as well as they have I agree with you as a lot of bullet and not much sabot.I've tried them in my 22 twist Paramount did not have near success that I have with the one in 20 Wilson barrel however I have to say this Wilson barrel shoots a little bit of everything it may be my most accurate overall barrel with every bullet I shoot.
Great post & I appreciate the info you shared. Theres so much to learn in this amazing evolution on Ml's & SML's & its an incredible, enjoyable learning experience. This is somethin i'm going to seriously consider for when I have a .45 SML instead of the 1:20 everyone is going to. I was leaning more toward a 1:18 twist, but like Mnt monkey due to the climate we both have & for the ease of use & capabilities of high bc .40 bullets in a sabot is really a good thing & pragmatic for hunting purposes.. The 1:14 twist .45 is somethin I'm gonna go learn some more about. Thanks for a great post14 twist would be my choice in a 45 cal wanting to shoot long 40 cal saboted bullets. Years ago, The Accurate Rifle Magazine had the results of fast vs slow twist shooting very high quality bullets of various weights. Fast twist won out on both short and long bullets In a hunting environment.
I have an 8 twist 22-250AK IMP. I can shoot 40 NBTs at 4400’/sec (Quick Load derived load) and shoot appx 0.30 moa. 80g Sierras and 75 g Amaxes shoot in the high .2’s . My 14” twist 22-250 AK IMP is in the low 0.4s with the 40s and 50 sNBTs. Also, fast twist barrels are far less load dependent.
Fast is where its at!
