I'm sure there were many who fit that description, some whose exploits were never told. 

I read "Blood and Thunder" last year a history on Kit Carson by historian Hampton Sides. Good read and some truly amazing exploits. He was one of the greats.

The author, Leighton L. Baker, bought the A.W. Peterson Gun  Shop in Denver and moved it to Mt. Dora, Florida. He specialized in muzzleloaders even though most of his sales were modern guns.

I used to talk to him at times and he'd open up occasionally about his ancestors. Jim Baker was his great-great grandfather I think. He was pissed because some "authority" had Jim Baker married to a Cherokee. Leighton had done an extensive search on his ancestors and there wasn't a Cherokee in the mix.

I was good friends for about 15 years with his son, Stuart, who had a crush on my wife. I sold my Pantera to his other son, Roy. His grandson?, Carey Baker was a state representative and a state senator who championed gun rights.

He sure acted like he was.

The A.W. Peterson gun shop is still in business and is the only place within 35 miles of me that sells real black powder.

In the '70s he was still doing hunting expeditions to British Honduras (Belize) and the Yucatan for brocket deer, ocellated turkeys and cats (ocelots and maybe jaguars too). The prices were too steep for me although it probably wasn't much more than a thousand dollars.

My AMM Chapter in Colorado is "The Jim Baker Party" we have studied this mountainman's ventures for years.


I personally liked these two as they lived here in Colorado and did most of their business here. Both known for their short tempers.
