I found some of this at Sportsman’s Warehouse and wondered if anyone was using it in a SML?
It reads:
Accurate 5744 is an extremely fast burning, double-base, extruded powder. This unique powder can be used in a wide range of rifle calibers and magnum handguns. 5744 is characterized by excellent ignition and consistency over a very wide performance range. Low bulky density and superior ignition characteristics make 5744 an excellent choice for reduced loads in many rifle calibers and in large capacity black powder cartridges such as the 45-70 through 45-120 and 50-90 through 50-120. Made in Canada.

Seems like it should work good in a .45 to me, just curious.

Check those loading books never heard of 5744 being used as the primary powder but that doesn't mean it won't work Check the burning rate and see what its close too Good Luck

AA 5744 was a Recommended Book Powder for the .50 Cal Savage 10-ML. What Henry & Bill Ball the Inventors used. Very easily ignited, kind of Dirty Burning & Not the Best Velocity.

Bill Ball’s preferred/recommended load was 42g 5744/300XTP in a MMP HPH12 out of his 24” 50 cal barrel. That was the 1st recommended 10ML load. That load remained (42-44g) for several years in the 10ML2 owner’s manuals.

As far as MLII use

Pros:
Forgiving and easy to use
Very easy to ignite
Lee Dipper friendly but i would weigh it if using max loads.
Suitable for all recommended bullet weights

Cons:
Dirty
Poor fps vs other fast powders like N110.
Peak pressure somewhat high for the fps you get.

Been using the 5744 Accurate for about 10 years in multiple Savage ML10 for hunting big bucks in Manitoba. Exceptional results with three big buck killed by our group of five at distances of 200 to 208 yards. We have been using Hornady SST grain bullets, and most every kill went no more than 100 yards. We do not shoot longer distance than about 220 yards, due to our practicing has shown only about 1 inch penetration in a 2 inch plank at 250 yards. We don't want to cripple such magnificent up to 350 pound bucks, so we just shoot no more than about 200 yards. Hope this helps you out!

I use to have a Savage ML that I used it in worked well for me but I sold it,have loaded up 30 30 with it And 300 BO like someone said it is a little dirty but works well.

GM54-120’s pros and cons are dead on. Greatest strengths are easy to ignite and quite temp insensitive. However, velocity vs pressure is poor compared to virtually all other commonly used powders in the 50 cals and especially in 45s. I wouldn’t use it, especially sabotless, in a 45. It would work well as a primer powder (1st part of a duplex load such as 7-10 gains).

it works, you'll just hit your pressure ceiling a bit faster than with 4198 (which seems to be the go-to for .40-50 SML). just throwing some numbers for IMR 4227 (slightly faster burning than Accurate 5744, so you should be reasonably safe) in the P-max calculator:

IMR 4227, .45. 28" barrel, 300gr lead bullet, 100% load density (obviously):
21gr- 27,964 PSI- 1,572 FPS
35gr- 53,465 PSI - 2076 FPS

250gr Lead bullet
26gr- 28,823 PSI - 1,874 FPS
42gr- 53,032PSI- 2,423 FPS

400gr Lead Bullet
15gr- 26,472 PSI - 1181 FPS
26gr- 52,115 PSI - 1600FPS

500gr Lead Bullet
12gr- 26,595 psi - 963 FPS
21gr- 53,352 PSI - 1,314 FPS

Suitable for most practical purposes. Then again, I've never really bought into the whole 10kagillion feet per second SML with light weight, jacketed bullets with aluminum nose thing.

Funny thing about using AA5744 in a Savage 10 ML &II’s. All the deer I’ve killed using it have never asked me what powder were you using?
And how fast was that bullet going?
IMO it gets the job done fine.

How dirty does one’s barrel get on hunt?
How much velocity does one need for say up to 200yds?
😁
I see in above post an important part of AA 5744 in using cf is not mentioned. It’s not position sensitive.ie: 38/55 and such.

Maybe the shooter is powder sensitive🤣

I have an 8# jug of 5744. Im not a speed freak, just lookin for accuracy. I plan to try it in a couple SMLs regardless of dirty results. With other powders being hard to locate still, i was happy to find it at a good price. Also plan to try it in a couple CFs.
