Went to the local gun show yesterday with zero plans to come home with another gun...unless itā€™s a decent front stuffer in a caliber I donā€™t already have. Sure enough there lay a CVA Mountain rifle in .45.
I pick it up, look her over and could tell it was kit built. I wasnā€™t too sure about it. Had a nice feel. So hummed and hawed and walked around a bit to look at other vendors tables. Then I left altogether to go maybe 10km towards home when I pulled over a googled the CVA Mtn rifle. I was heading back to purchase šŸ˜ƒ
I need a .45 Hawken style rifle to quasi complete my collection. So here she is.
I plan on redoing wood to darker finish and re-browning metal. One thing I noticed right away was there was something in the nipple. The previous owner fashioned a small picture mail to sit on the nipple?? Anyone hear or see this before?
Did I do good on my purchase. Iā€™ve only one other CVA that I purchased from a widow. Itā€™s the Kentucky model in .50. Thanks in advance and look forward to your replies.

Sgt Recoil.

I don't know what you paid for it but you certainly could have done much worse. In my experience these rifles have "good bones" and very accurate barrels. I once had an old "beater" that was kit built, and that thing would evermore shoot! I've owned a couple of others and discovered they drop deer just as well as the customs.

The one I built (1986) was a good shooter. Foolishly, it was sold so I could buy something else.... You did well!

Iā€™ll have to do a search for when it was made. One thing I noticed from other bp guns that have passed thru these hands were the thimbles.
not your standard round pice of brass or metal with a hole drilled thru. These have more elegance imo. 45594E3C-A3BA-4CC6-9CB1-95B44F97D414.jpeg783C9353-492E-4F33-AFC4-B1F171370887.jpeg45594E3C-A3BA-4CC6-9CB1-95B44F97D414.jpeg783C9353-492E-4F33-AFC4-B1F171370887.jpeg

You did good I have a 50 I built back in the early 70's never has had a problem it shoots more accurately then me. I also have a 58 that I picked up several years ago that was a kit gun also .

What the deciding factor was the twist rate of 1:66. Nothing I like better is launching round balls at targets of opportunity :coffee:
I regrettably passed on a .58 CVA Mtn rifle a couple years back. In really good condition too. I have my .58 cal Green Mountain barrelled TC .54 Hawken (second from the bottom) so had no need. After seeing the nicetyā€™s of the CVA I wish I hadnā€™t.

it is like when you were a kid and the puppy followed you home and your mother said you could keep it!! dad didn't have a say in it! times have changed!!

Looks like you found yourself a good .45 smoker Sgt Recoil.
Be sure to let us know what load it likes.

p.s. Nice collection šŸ‘

Iā€™ll have a look for the USA stamp.
what about serial # ?

Whenever I went to a gun show, I always planned and hoped to go home with at least one new or "new to me" gun.
I have more than enough guns and more than the wife knows. I never expected to see one that I was looking for. ;)

I have a "Made in America" in .50 at home, don't know how they did their serial numbering system between different calibers but I'll try to remember to see what it is.

I got a chance to do some work on it.
removed the browning and started on the wood.
you can see the ser# better now too. 63390143-40E9-4CC1-8810-73BF82482AE0.jpeg63390143-40E9-4CC1-8810-73BF82482AE0.jpeg81D89A6E-1562-4CDF-91EF-7B601B2B0DF5.jpeg
