I decided to try Blackhorn with some lead conicals in a .408
These were some of the figures .
.408 cal. Bestill 700 ml
410 gr .410 No excuse conical sized to .4075

70 gr. Blackhorn
1452
1452
1454
1486

65 gr Blackhorn
1378
1384
1376
1393
1386
1400

60 gr Blackhorn
1366
1367
1359
1366
1360
The Blackhorn worked great and I decided to start using it with my conicals instead of 777. Measurements were by volume poured on site so not as consistent as it could be .
I need to do some more experimenting yet but it sure was a fun time :). I shot up a whole box of no excuses . I ran out of regular primers with 3 bullets left . I only had some 777 primers . I tried them and they worked perfect . Must be the breech plug design

That is pretty much what you would get if you loaded a 410gr in a 40-90. Heckuva good load IMO. Just 60gr of powder clocking over 1300fps is sweet. Easier on the shoulder and it makes a jug of BH209 go much further.

Doc claimed his 400gr Power Punch had a BC of .320 and this is what he says 90gr of Pyro P clocks

If that’s the case then 60gr Blackhorn is faster than 90 gr pyrodex p with the 410 gr conical . Couple that up with no swabbing and I think I like it :) gonna try some Blackhorn and conicals in my 45 next.

I tried a 530 grain lead conical with 40 to 50 grains Blackhorn . If I remember correctly 40 grains was around 1100 fps 50 grains was 1275 fps .

80gr by volume, veggie wad and NoExcuses 460gr gave me around 1450fps in my 27" Pacnor. A Bullshop 488gr was right up there too.

I shoot 80 grains volume BH209 and a 460 no excuse and a veggie wad out of my .45 1-20” Mountaineer with great success. If I remember right it averages around 1480fps. The veggie wad is a must, without one it sends the bullets off the target.

I apologize for not clarifying my statement . 40 grains by weight was 1100 fps 50 grains by weight was 1275 fps with a 530 grain bullet.

My white thunderbolt likes BH and bull shops in 504.5. I haven't needed a veggie wad or sub base to date .I need to get a chrono and get with the times ...

Not to derail thread but any recommendations

I bought this cheapie one but it works good for me

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0028MTB ... b_pd_title

Same one I use. Works on everything I’ve tried- bows, rifles, muzzleloaders, handguns.

I've also used the NE 460 over a veggie wad and 80gr BH209 out of my Disc Extreme. I think the veggie wad keeps the BH209 packed a little better since the NE 460s are essentially slip fit in my gun. BH209 likes to be compressed, more so than pyrodex or 777. I have even used two wads just to be sure the powder stays packed tight.

Just finished shooting a 540 grn. Grease Groove bullet pushed by 63 grns. by weight BH209, .060 Veg wad. 7 straight shots and no bore wiping. Got setting a 100 yds. put in 43 MOA and hit 2 Rams at 500 yds.

Sounds good. I might try that load. I just weight out 25 loads at 49 gr I think I might weight some at 63 and see how it does. My GG are 530gr so that ought to be close to your 540

Thats a thumper alright. Its a 45-110 load.
500 RNFP
Fed 215
50.0gr (weight)
1,495fps
26,660kpsi
89% load density

It should be noted that in a ML the load density will be around 100% which will increase pressure. At the same time though as a "land rider" the pressure should be less.

A 45-120 is launching a 500gr just over 1500fps with 53grW and creating almost 29kpsi but at a lower 77% load density. I would love to see a pressure trace of a 63grW load and a 530gr conical. One veggie wad does not add up to much "filler" like that is used in the cartridge data(wad and dacron). The 45-120s pressure increase from just 3 more grains seems high especially when the load density is less.

I understand the wad stays tight on the powder to help ignite BH. However, that does nothing to hold the bullet. For those using the NoExcuses bullets. You don't have a problem with the bullet moving off the wad? I carry my gun with barrel down and worry about that.
