MrTom, mayflies on the Mississippi were the first thing I thought of, when I saw the cricket pic. “That isn’t very many bugs…”

That'll teach them to leave a light on.
Lake Erie can be the same way. You learn quickly to cover the ports so no light is visible, or end up spraying off the boat for an hour or more.

I've seen the mayfly hatch so bad that road graders were used to clear highway lanes where overhead lighting was used. I'm talking of curls of dead bugs two and three feet deep being pushed off the road surface.

That picture was taken at one of the dam facilities, I believe Lock and Dam #3. And that pile of dead bugs is nothing compared to some years.
