Its going to be dragged through the woods in all sorts of weather so it needs to be durable.

Most of us aren’t Military Grade combat hunting/shooting.
Nope but his priority is DURABLE and quite often military grade optics are durable. Nightforce SHV is a somewhat affordable line with better than average durability. It dont sound like he is dialing so that helps a bit. Trijicon is probably a better value with similar or better glass.

The STAC 3-16x42 will stomp any scope in the same price range aside from the SWFA SS fixed power. Cameraland usually has sales on them for $300 or less. Great durability, eye relief and tracking with glass well above its price point. Avoid the MOA reticle though unless its strictly for the bench. Its much too thin for many hunting situations.

If you want more magnification the 4-20x50 is a dandy. Ive seen these on sale too for $300.

Buy the best you can afford or save for what you really want if not needed right away. Good scopes hold their value.

DVOR (part of Optics Planet)has a good sale on Zero Tech scopes right now

Meopta Optika6 or Optika 5. Nothing better for the money. Never had one loose zero on numerous hard kicking smokeless muzzleloaders and rifles. A guy needs good mounts also I use DNZ Game Reaper one piece mounts on everything.
