I bought my daughter a TC Hawken 50 cal LRH for an upcoming muzzloader hunt here in Idaho and decided to dispense with the crescent butt plate to give her a more enjoyable rifle. I know that will be heresy to the traditionalists out there but now she will be able to handle heavier loads and enjoy the sport of Muzzleloading. I will give credit to IdahoRon for this mod as I did this to my rifle a couple of years ago after seeing his.

I am using a Kick EZ Magnum medium pad (502-125-M-B) for this project and it’s fairly simple to do. I’m using a Miles Gilbert Recoil Pad Installation Fixture I got from MidwayUSA and you’ll need a belt sander.

Here is the stock taped off before cutting. I just followed the front edge of the crescent butt plate with painters tape (double wrapped to protect the stock from chipping while I cut it.

This is her stock compared to mine and you can see the length of pull barely changes.

Next I’m using my porta bandsaw to make the cut and then sand the stock square.

Next Center the recoil pad over the stock and drill holes to attach the pad. Make sure it’s positioned correctly so the screws won’t come through the toe of the stock. Attach the pad and then scribe the outline of the stock into the pad.

Now attach the pad to the Miles Gilbert fixture and set the angles you’ll need to grind with a square. The instructions are pretty good on this setup.

Following the instructions you’ll grind the toe-line first and then the comb-line.

Last step is some hand sanding to blend out some of the belt sander marks and then you’re ready to attach to your gun and go shooting!

Now those 488 gr bullets that IdahoLewis sent me won’t be as painful as they could be!

Apologies for the picture orientation. Not sure how to load them correctly but you get the idea if you turn sideways!

Skeeter355, I like it a BUNCH!! You did an EXCELLENT Job on the install my friend :yeah: Some folks really like the Crescent Butt plates (Mostly Traditional Folks) I personally HATE a Crescent Butt Plate, They simply don’t fit my style of shooting.
