I was thinking how versatile the 45-70 conversions are. How you can use either BH209 or smokeless. The variety of bullets, either 45 cal bore rider or 40 cal in a sabot. You can just do so much with it as far as loads. I really like my CVA blk/blue Scout 45-70 conversion.

I totally agree with you on this. I had Mr. Fisk convert my scout v2 with Luke’s 209 plug then when Hank came out with a replacement plug with modules I got that. Left photo is the 200 sst in smooth harvester with 209 plug. Right pic is with 45/70 modules. Top 2 shots were 225 FTX other 2 were 250 FTX on clean cold barrel. All shot @ 100 yards.

I have an Encore 45-70 barrel I picked up on eBay. It has what looks like a Savage plug, with a vent liner. It has nothing to indicate whether it is safe for smokeless, but I don't see why it wouldn't be. It is mostly an idle question, since we can't hunt with smokeless during muzzleloader season here in NM.

I believe that if your barrel is marked from the factory as being chambered for a 45/70 that it would be safe for smokeless loads. There is a lot of info for loads. I have a 45/70 CVA Scout that has been converted to a muzzleloader. I shoot 56 to 65 grains of Imr4198 with a 250 grain bullet sized to fit. I like it better than my 10ml2.

Agree if it's 45-70 barrel it should handle smokeless. I shoot saboted loads mostly. I usually stay around the 200 to 225gr bullets.

The majority of 45cal SML sabot loads with a 200gr wont even break 34kpsi. A max load of N120 is right around 34kpsi with a 200gr SST. Its way under that with 4198 or Re7. Sabotless can easily hit 44kpsi and that is much higher than "lever gun" 45/70 load data. Its approaching Ruger #1 load data which is quite hot for a 1" tube.

A resized .410 Barnes 180gr bullet, slightly knurled, in a light blue harvester sabot with N-110 is what I use most of the time. I'm sure it's not very high pressure....lol....
It's accurate, deadly, and best of all very shoulder friendly....lol....

N110 peaks fast but drops fast too. As long as you stay 35gr or less its not too hard to work with. Much more than that and its super rough on sabots because it rises so fast. A little tinkering and you can use more but you probably wont get much past 38gr reliably.

Sure is a shame 4759 is gone.....Great powder for lower end sabot loads and you can hit 2300fps-2400fps without much of a headache. When i was trying 4759 i could use 39gr without a problem. No tinkering needed and thats over 2300fps IIRC. I think it was around 41 or 42gr i started seeing signs of stress but i may not have been waiting long enough for the barrel to cool. It seemed to be really dependable too. Easy to ignite but i never played with it long enough to test for temp stability. N110 is rock solid in that area.

That's about where I'm at. N110 does everything I want/need. Everything from 180gr to 225gr bullets it does great. It's clean burning, dependable, and accurate. I would love to run the 180s over a chrono to see how fast they are.

I have an as yet unconverted CVA Scout V2 45-70 with the muzzle break in the camo version with a burnt bronze cerakote barrel. Barrel length and muzzle break are the same as the stainless model. I have acquired some Underwood Extreme Hunter +P 325 grain fluted solid copper ammo that is said to shoot 2275 fps with 3735 foot pounds of energy. Does anyone know the internal pressure of this ammo and is this gun safe to shoot this ammo? TIA
