Many years ago I purchased a 50 caliber Ultimate Muzzleloader from RJ/KJ @ Ultimate Firearms in Okemos.
For many years I shot Triple7 pellets and never changed the breech plug. After seeing many great reviews regarding Blackhorn 209, I decided to switch propellants a couple years ago.
My research turned up flame cut plug concerns, so I switched to the LRMP Module System from Luke @ Arrowhead.
Needless to say, getting the original plug out was a long, white knuckled affair but it finally came out... in 3 large pieces.
To avoid this, I currently remove the plug for cleanup/maintenance every 15-20 shots. When reinstalling, I currently use Loctite LB8150 Anti-Seize compound. It works great, but is messy.
Anyone have suggestions for a cleaner alternative?

Slick 50 teflon grease is what I use. I bought a tube at Walmart years ago and still have over half a tube. I don't see it anymore, not sure if its made any longer. Great on my breechplugs!!

Ive tried nearly everything. They all work well. Currently im using the CVA anti seize stick. It looks just like a giant chapstick but black.

One of my favorites that really worked great is this CRC Sta-Lube anti-seize engine assembly lube.

imho, any lube will probably work well if you're pulling the plug and cleaning it regularly.

I bought some automotive anti seize about 30 years ago for some manifold bolts. I now have a lifetime supply. My Kahnke rifle has to be disassembled to remove the breech plug, so I only do it once a year. I shoot 777, and never have trouble removing it.

I have a can of Fel-Pro copper hi-temp anti-seize that I got from my Dad and he's been gone since 06/07/93. I scooped some out and put it into a prescription pill bottle with a toothpick in it to stir it up before use and it doesn't take much of that stuff to work. I shoot BH209 in my Plains Rifle and I never have a hint of a problem. Comes right out.

I've wondered about using a copper anti seize instead of a nickel or even the ceramic and graphite formulas. There are a lot of different anti seize lubes and i dont think breech plugs even come close to the worst that they(anti seize) are intended for.

The original UF plugs were designed to NOT come out. The arrowhead plugs WERE designed to come out. I have a UF Black Widow with an Arrowhead conversion in it and shoot heavy loads of BH. I install my plug with teflon tape and a few dabs of gun oil. I normally don't remove the plug until the end of hunting season when I put the rifle up for the year. The plug stays in for 2-3 months. I have no problem with the plug coming out or corrosion. I will clean the bore if it will be more than a day e between shooting sessions. The Arrowhead conversion in an UF does not need to come out every 15-20 shots. With tape and oil it will come out at the same torc as it went in. I'm sure this system I use would make some guys nervous but to each his own.

michiganmuzzly: Does the CRC Engine Assembly lube make a mess like Permatex #80078 Anti-Seize (silver color)? That stuff gets on any and everything it touches and it's close to impossible to clean off.....including your hands.
I know exactly what you mean. This stuff is not that bad. Its black and consistency is just like other anti seize. But it wipes off easily. I picked up this tube at the local CarQuest, on a whim. 10oz tube will last beyond forever. I can send you an ounce or 2 if you want to try some.

The magic paste I've been using is a "Silver Grade Anti-Seize"
