I recently returned from my Hunt in Illinois. I was a little freaked out about my variflames starting to leak a few days before departing.
I called CVA and they overnighted me a complete bolt, and also a new breech plug. Customer service has been excellent. I read a post on FB that said not to tighten the breech plug down but just snug it up. This is what i did and got no leakage. Apparently that little extra messes up the head space.
I was not able to fill my tag on a buck but did harvest a doe at 140 yards the last night. She was hit high shoulder and the ELR made a complete pass through. Track job was less than 40 yards with a good blood trail.
My only experience with the ELR and in my opinion it did what it was intended to do..
I just put the first 10 rounds thru my new Paramount yesterday. I tightened the BP in all the way ( snug ) then backed out approx 30 deg. At 105gr BW I had ZERO leakage throughout all 10 shots & what was super cool is I did not run a single patch or brush down it in between any of those shots. 10 consecutive shots without barrel cleaning & ZERO probs reloading even #10. I'm very happy with everything. Very grateful too. Kind regards

I agree Busta, I rarely hear of problems with The Older Model Vipers, and I know several guys/Friends that have them, and Love them. Even on BIG HEAVY Recoilers such as .338 Lapua Magnums, Those Scopes are stil Going year after year Without a Glitch :lewis: I don’t know what Vortex has going on now days? But it’s obviously not working! Why would they Stop/Discontinue something that is Working well, and Well Proven? About every Optic Company out there Does it, and it makes NO Sense? Hopefully Vortex gets tired of Replacing These newer Model Scopes, and get it back to RIGHT like they seemed to of had it with the Old Vipers. At some point Through the VIP Warranty of Back n Forth Shipping/Replacing these Higher dollar Scopes, Their Profit margin would have to Start dwindling.

Mine was Working FLAWLESS on the 600 Yard Gong Shoot, i then headed to 825 Yards shortly after, i was SO CLOSE, But Looking back on that Situation, i have NO DOUBT in my Mind that my Scope Started Failing RIGHT THERE on that Particular 825 Yard Shoot, i would place money on it!!! I re Grouped a Few days later to go back up and Make that 825 Yard Gong Shoot HAPPEN on Video, I stopped to do a Real Quick 100 Yard Zero Check? GOOD THING I DID THAT! The Scope was TOAST!! It would NOT Hold Zero? It would Jump 6” to the Right, then back Left. I am not Making ANY Excuses on the 825 Yard Shoot, I knew i had it EASY!! But in Replay of my 1 and only attempt at it, i had several Shots that were unexplained AWOL MISSES??? Like Several Feet, i am 110% Confident those Shots were NOT me! The Scope was FAILING. And IRONICALLY, as stated above, my VERY next outing the Scope would NOT Hold Zero.

I totally lost Heart in it, Took it off and Tossed it in the Safe, i Actually Forgot about it. It was my Close Friend, and Sportshop Owner that talked me in to Sending it Back, In fact he ended up doing it for me, Then Making me a SMOKIN Deal on a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X56, He kept the Replacement Vortex they Sent me :lewis:
I've had exactly the same thing happen to 2 diff scopes ( much cheaper scopes than we are talking about now, less than half this price range) on a .50 mag ML & on my Browning 7mm Rem mag. Thats when I stopped buying cheaper scopes & applied the rule of thumb ( matching scope price to rifle price at a min ) and became a big Shepherd scope fan & remain one to this day. I had planned on putting the Shepherd BRS 5-25x56 34mm IRMOA for 750.00 Great price on a great scope IMHO. I've had 3 other Shepherds & have been impressed with both quality price & performance. ZERO probs or complaints ever.

Not poo pooing Vortex at all. Got a DB HP sitting right next to me waiting on some Vortex rings right now. The simple fact is... the guys cranking out 300gr bullets over 2800fps in SMLs choose 2 scopes a lot. Sightron SIIIs and Nightforce....Why..because needing the warranty is far less common that needing the VIP warranty. Plus the Sightron gets really high marks for glass quality and tracking for under a grand.

I would by a Razor HD LH in a blink for the right price. But if im risking much over $500 on a really hard kicker its not gunna be on a Viper when i know i can buy tougher scopes made in Japan for the same $$$$s. I just went back to Midway hoping they still had the deal on the Viper HS.

So im pretty far from anti Vortex.
Thanks for the insight on the Vortex Viper, so far its doin it's job. Fingers crossed. TY for the heads up on the Sightron SIII scope. I did some shopping for them, read all the details & spec's. Then I went on YT & watched several videos & range testing reviews on them to further get a better insight on them, their quality & performance for the price. They are getting Zeiss & Swarovski ratings on their quality of glass & tracking. And they seem to hold up well to the super mag smokers & the SML's. As I've previously stated a cpl times, I am a bis fan of the Shepherd scope for all the same reasons you told me about the Sightron's, price included. I appreciate now having another great option to seriously consider ( and save save save for ) should this Viper take a 10-100 on me. If I don't put a brake on this soon, my shoulder & broken up old dilapidated body of mine just might go " Tango Uniform " long before this scope does. LOL
Once again, thank you for some great information that I know I can rely on being fair, honest, & accurate, as well as very informative. Much appreciated, kind regards

Little info on me. I have a knight LRH. Im sick of the blow back and the little red disc. I run BH209 and hornaday 250gr sst. I used a lux scope and almost copied toby's load based on his setup.

Im done with the gun and want a real shooting ml. This guns okay just jumps around a lot and not as consistent as Id like. As for the money, I have up to 2500-3k to spend without a scope. I will be using this gun to deer hunt, my shots will be 100- 250 yards ,300 tops. I want easy of use. The gun weight is a none issue, for the most part. I do not want to cut bullets down, and fittle around alot. I want an absolute tack driver that holds patterns. With that being said I will be spending hours fine tuning the loads and finding the correct setup. Im not looking for a miracle without hours of work on my end. Im looking for suggestions on my 4 choices.

1) get a rem ultimate ml and go thru arrowhead and get the barrel replaced to make it a real shooter. This is based off lukes suggestions on a 300-350 yard gun which is what im looking at. ($1800ish)

2) get a paramount and get the arrowhead primer fixed ($1100ish) Id probably wait for 2020 and get a muzzle break one

3) go to ultimate firearms and get a bp xpress muzzleloader from johnston. My uncle has one and its just amazing. I like the bolt action 45 primer compared to changing the other MLs. Downside I prefer bh209 and I dont think he suggests using it or likes that stuff. Basically this is 10 year old technology. with no upgrades. What are your thoughts?(3000)

4) suck it up, and deal with the knight LRH for as little as I use it. (Cheese and wine)

If I were me, and believe me I've been through all this stuff, I'd go for #1. No if's about it.

I shot the BP Xpress for years and although it can be a very accurate rifle, its one drawback is the outdated ignition system. Luke also created a fix for that with the Gen2 breech plug replacement. Been there also. After all the time and money spent, in the long run I'd have saved myself a lot of money and time buy just going custom. Which I finally have.

If you want the most accurate rifle of what you mentioned, go with one of Luke's upgrades. Once you get used to the changes, you'll be very happy with the end results. No more worrying about leaking brass, gas cut nipples, leaking primers, or vari-flame outfits. You'll end up with a rifle more than capable of what you're asking. You will end up with a rifle that will test YOUR abilities.
Top the rifle with a high quality scope and it will amaze you what the rifle is capable of.

#1 also. The 700 is a platform that's been proven repeatedly. And so much you can do to customize it.

You have been around here a awful long time to not know how to resolve that cheaply with Lehigh parts. Kits used to be just $25ish and they are still under $40.

#1) Is more expensive but the most proven platform at this time.

I originally joined this in 2010 before goong on a Iowa deer hunt looking for help on my setup. Once my hunt was over I was never online till lady night.

I googled about the paramount, read all 24 pages of this thread. Forgot my password and had to figure out my old email address password to even log in.

So. Some people have said #1. Are we saying or assuming that the rem ultimate ml is better than the paramount? Um assuming cause of the rem 700 plateform there is alot of options

The Paramount is 700 compatible, so that point don't hold any water with me.

I know a guy that has been trying to get a RUM shooting for 5 years. I see he was on the Paramount Facebook channel a few days ago.

#2, unless you intend to shoot them exotic powders, then put the $700 you saved towards some good glass.

Hi, I just got my Paramount less than 2 wks ago. I just fired the first 10 rounds through it Sun. It's an awesome " Plug N Play " set up that really really works well & doesn't cost 3-6K either. I put 2 rounds through the same hole at 100 yards, I'd call that a " TAC DRIVER " in my book anyway. I found this in looking at
Levi's ( LRCustoms) MZ-REX Brake kit for my Paramount & I saw this LRC Ultimate .45 Conversion for 1600.00 W/his MZ-REX brake on it. I thought I'd pass that along to you with the hopes of perhaps being a help finding what you're looking for. Best of luck with your search, The guys in here know what they are talking about through yrs & decades of experience. The advise you got in feedback is What I think anyone would call solid advise & you chould listen. I did the same thing myself not long ago. This group helped me inadvertently & directly in making my decision on the Paramount I got, after a year of looking around & learning everything I can, read everything I could find on the ML's I was considering ( for what I could afford ) & joined here & read everything I could find & asked questions & became an active member & actually read the new days email w?all the new posts every mornin w/my coffee. Kind regards

Im pretty sure the bp xpress is out the window. Like others have said cost and old technology.

I spoke to Luke on the phone briefly. Hes a straigh shooter and will definitely do business with him. I told him my goals and how far I wanted to go. Very polite guy and those are the peope I will gladly pay extra and support.

I have been out of the ml world a bit too long, almost 10 years. After researching, talking to custom ml makers a die tool is basically essential now if your goal is long range. I will primarily only hunt and I need to make a choice if the money is worth it.

Currently I dont know if I can commit to the time with how busy work is, but will sleep on it over the next few days. Im leading towards the paramount, with a few custom tweaks. I have some research to do on my lunch breaks on the forum on a few concerns on the rifle.

I've followed closely the Paramount and looked at the 700ml.
So many minute issues and upgrades, conversions to get there.
All I want is a 28" or even 30" barrel, 209 primer, Blackhorn 209 compatible. And preferably a bolt. Hopefully in .45 caliber and 1:20 twist. Max range 300yards
Still looking
From what I've seen that's close a lot less than $3,000.
For that much let Bestill Customs build it or the Cooper, but no real reason except
what I've read.

Why in the world would you go 30” when even 28” is excessive to get to 300 yards.

Well, I don't really think 28" is excessive for maximum velocity and accuracy, perhaps somewhat cumbersome. 30" probably is excessive but still be a consideration for a custom build. I would have to discuss with the builder and look at any real world advantages. There are 2 commercially available "long range" rifles now with 30" barrels.

Yup I won't be disappointed with the Paramount, I'm pretty dang sure about that. My philosophy is always getting thee best quality fr what I can afford. I don't mess with NO bargain basement junk with my tools or my toys. I wanted an all purpose plug N play sub moa ML in .45 to hunt from 50-600yards
The paramount does that in spades. I have only 1600.00 tied up in the whole setup. Not including what the brake & barrel threading will cost me.That's just awesome IMHO. If I didn't end up with the paramount I would have saved up until I could get a Hankins or Arrowhead custom. Even putting a smokeless barrel on the paramount is an amazing affordable choice. Kind regards
Let up know what you decide & post up some ML porn when ya get what you decide on will ya
