Well most of you know my saga with Lyman.
So I am going to need a new smoke pole.
I don't really want to spend over $500 right now.
Looking a the Traditions Hawken Woodsmans,  the Prairie Hawken & Mountian Rifle.
Kit or Finished.
Also a local person has a new Pedersoli for $400
What say you ?
or Ideas ?

Which model? Depending on the model that might be a great buy.  Pedersoli makes solid guns.

Traditional Hawken.
Cabelas sells it for $599

There are quite a few Hawken-type rifles for sale on various forums. Some are under $300. If you can find one close to you and inspect the bore in person, you can get a good rifle for a moderate price.

Buying a used muzzleloader online is a crap shoot since you can't inspect it prior to purchase.

I'd skip that pedersoli. If its the one with no lock panels, no way! :affraid:

Of all the rifles you listed, I like the Traditions Prairie Hawken the most. I agree with Brownbear that the Pedersolis are very solid rifles but I don't like the way they designed the stock. There is no definition to the lockplates and for some reason they like to have their triggerguards stand proud of the stock. They simply took the old Investarms Hawken style and cheapened it up IMHO Just to give you a little perspective, I bought this Investarms .54 cal at a local gun show.

I have two Investarm Hawkens, a .58 cal flintlock and a .54 cal perc.  I like both rifles, solid performers.  Your .54cal is a great hunting caliber. You won’t be disappointed.

Not to sound dumb, but what are the lock panels ?

if you can go 750 my friend has a american made traditions from deer island . stock is real maple, barrel is american made by deer island. new sights, pro blueing 1/60 twist for 50 cal. a tack driver with any amount of powder. barrel is cryo treated.these are hard to find and the real deal. he has two of them and i built both of them for him. i know it is a 750 firm and well worth it. you would not go wrong.

I am leaning towards the traditions hawken kit.
Less than $300

Its a lot of fun to be looking for a new rifle. Don't rush it. Enjoy the search. Find a bargain that feels good. Brag to us after.

Good hunting.

Got a line on an Investarms .45 Cal for maybe $200

Your thoughts ?

Investarms are good rifles (see mine above). $200 is a very good price as long as it's in good condition. Definately check the bore and lock function. These usually came with pretty nice wood. I was actually looking for a .45 when I found my .54 but the price was too good to pass up.

T/C Hawkens can be had used for $250 and up. Unless you specifically want to build a kit, you should look at the black powder gun ads here and on other similar forums.

I have a T/C Hawken and it shoots well. I don't hunt with it because it's too heavy for me to lug around.

There's a .54 T/C Renegade on here for $275.

That Hawken kit would make a nice rifle. It would be brand new and fairly easy to sell if you ever changed your mind and wanted something else.  I like Kentucky Colonel's advice, take your time and shop around.  Sounds like you could be slightly undecided as to what exactly you want so far.

Want a Hawken style for sure.
1:48 or slower twist.
Kit, No kit undecided, either will do.
I never see a T/C Hawken for anywhere near $250 unless it is in really bad shape.

I put a Traditions Hawken kt on hold for myself today at work.
It looks like it will need very little work as there is very little wood proud of the metal.
