I am coming back to muzzleloaders after a decade or so, and have discovered that you can’t get Goex anymore, which is all I ever used.

I still have a sealed can of Goex FFG that I found buried in my stash, but even if I treat it like the queens gold, I know I will run out sooner or later (probably sooner). What is the consensus “go to” now for percussion and flintlock rifles?

Schuetzen brand is good stuff from what I've read. About the same as Goex.
Swiss is the top of line black powder.
Loose powder Triple 7 is a good choice for a sub if that's all you can get.

Thank you and will start there. Is there an all in one substitute that works in the flash pan of a flintlock, or am I going to need to buy an FFFG equivalent for that?

I don't shoot flintlocks myself but I do read alot about them. From what I gather, real black powder is the only reliable ignition system for the flashpan.

Thanks and I would like to at least start with real black powder. Will look into both brands, and found my old account at the MML sister site. Forgot I was active there back in 2009

Substitutes will not ignite reliably in a flintlock. The ignition temperature is just too high. You need black powder for the pan and at least ten grains in the bore if you need to use a substitute for the main charge. 2, 3, or 4f black powder work equally well for the pan.

Never mind, I see you have Black on order. Perfect!

Thank you. I’m going to hold on to my can of FF Goex and see what I can grab in genuine black FFF from the Maine Powder House. I will drive up there if needs be….

The vast majority of their powder shows either “Out Of Stock,“ or “Available On Backorder.” They’ve been out of anything that I’m looking for. Be sure to call, before driving! 😆

LOL. Yes, that would be only to pick up a prepaid order that I knew was waiting for me…

I got a rock snapper from Cabela's Bargain Cave. It sparks just fine. But I didn't feel like getting a can of black powder. And one fine summer afternoon I set out with pyrodex and the Will to Make the Thing Go Bang. I think I tried a couple dozen times and I got about five shots. But three of those were with the rifle held stationary, the frizzen open with a bunch of pyrodex in the pan and a match. The bottom line? No sub for black powder in a flint lock.

Subs are a bad idea in a flintlock because of ignition problems.

On the the "Goex Problem". First off, Goex is NOT THE ONLY BLACK POWDER in the world. Schuetzen and Swiss are much, much better. I used to shoot Old Eysnford in competition shooting, it's a Goex product. After switching to Swiss, I'm not going back. Past that, I also work in teaching muzzleloading to kids at summer camps. Schuetzen supports our work with powder and caps. Goex wouldn't return a call or email. As far as I'm concerned now, Goex is dead to me and good riddance.
