Hodgdon Superformance Powder for .35 Whelen

I think their superformance ammo is probably a blend aka duplex of powder and they will never give up the ghost on that.

In January bought a CVA Scout in 35 Whelen. Anytime a discussion on the Whelen comes up, I am intently interested. Recently, I had a chance to pick up some Superformance powder, but passed. I had read about some pressure issues because of the duplex powder composition. That was on another forum, so it could have been overblown by the poster.

Anyone else know about potential over pressure issues for reloaders using Superformance?

Billyboy, FYI there claims of velocity probably have some optimism in them. As well as their claims for velocity in their performance ammo.

H414 if I remember correctly has a burn rate similar to IMR 4350. But it is more dense so you can fit more in the case. For me the IMR4350 was about the right powder but as stated couldn't fit enough it. But with H414 it was right on the money. At least it worked for me.

But I agree, there should be several powder choices to get the velocity you desire.

I have a CVA Scout in 35 Whelen and I use 4350 but only shooting hard cast GC RFN lead so not worried about high velocity, I'd take it Elk hunting as is no problem, of course I live in a area with alot of elk (before this bad winter anyway) I'll give the load after this 60+ Gust winds die down, probably tomorrow. It's quite a few steps to my reloading bldg. It's cold and I'm old!...Trader

I have a number of cast bullet choices myself. I never considered using them for elk and here is why. Im in Michigan and get the opportunity to hunt elk only every 5-6 years. Im 67 so my elk hunting days are over. They were DIY hunts. Plopped in the middle of the National Forest in Colorado and do our best. (scored 2 for 6 trips) I always wanted the most powerful cartridge that would give me distance. I needed every little bit of edge I could get. Thats why I loaded the 250 grain Speers, Noslers, Barnes, to the best and safest velocity I could get. I also used a 338 Winchester Mag.

But I have no doubt a heavy piece of lead will kill an elk with no problem. If you need some lead I would be willing to sell you some real cheap.
By the way. 1st elk 5x5 at 375 yards with 338, second 6x6 at 50 yards with 35 Whelen. I also have some 300 grain Barnes originals if anyone needs some.

Wind died down to 7 MPH this morning so made it out to my shed. I'm shooting 55 gr 4350 with a hard cast GC RNFT 215 gr projectile, gives a little shove to this 77 YR old shoulder but don't use it for P dogs or gophers. My hunting and trapping days will be over when the LORD calls me home. Trader

I use IMR 4064, no issues. Got several pounds at an estate sale, another reason, cheap . Cheap that works is alway's a +. The 35 Whelen is a hammer cartridge.

Hodgdon shows a Max Load of 55.0 Grs of H335 with 200 Gr Bullets @ 2,684 fps
