Thats ok herschel my story causes a completely different reaction called a "pucker" . Can you imagine THAT right before your very eyes happening ?!?!?!? I could not have shot.......nope . Life is cheap there .LMAO. At the video
I always wondered what brand of powder Val used when loading that up Hawken Hunter. Back then DuPont/Gearhart-Owen from PA and C&H from Scotland were the ready available powders and neither were as energetic as current red can Goex. Yet alone Swiss. I have many full cans of 1970's DuPont, G-O, and C&H that I aquired back in the '80's when I started shooting ML'ers. I have an October Country Great American Sporting Rifle .69 that is rated to 210gr. of unspecified FFg. I shot 180gr. of red can Goex 2Fg and it would barely break 1500 fps. Adding more Goex powder didn't gain any velocity. But when I tried 180gr. of Swiss 1.5Fg the velocity went up 250 fps!
Gosh i didnt realize there was That Much difference in Holy Black !!! Thats a wise decision Lewis . No Point in exceeding Safe Pressures. That Swiss is the "Blackhorn of Black" then !!! Thats a HUGE difference in velocity 451 whitworth got !!!! You be SAFE out there first and foremost !!! Youre a pretty darn Valueable Guy ya know !!!This is the 1 concern i have, and have Thought QUITE a bit about, NO DOUBT this Swiss 3F is Gonna be HOTTER than whatever Val used? Which was VERY likely Goex, I am leaning toward 150 Grains first and see how that Pans out? If it’s Clear in the Morning i am Gonna Do this
Swiss the the "hottest" bp you can get.
My guess for results on this-
complaints about recoil
poor accuracy
Watched the YouTube upload just now and my goodness that’s awesome. A ton of penetration with those big minies
Whats beautiful about that Really Big Lead the numbers cant show . Its the freight train MOMENTUM !!!!!! They Dont STOP !!!! High velocity lighter bullets CANT give you that . IF THEY ARE BIG ENOUGH they will also NOT DEFLECT EASILY !!!!! Ive shot those 766gr slugs and hit tbe outer third CURVATURE of an 8in dia hardwood , blew it OUT OF THE WAY , and STILL SMASHED the shoulders of a trotting 10pt 30 yds beyond that tree at dusk / dark . DRT !!!! Yep river bottom deer huntin is a LITTLE different !!! All kinds of stuff gets in tbe way . Oh yea , the bullet exited .!!!!! Ready to go Lewis ?? Id say so !!!!!!! Good job !!!!!YEP! This Setup would be a DEVASTATING HAMMER on Big Game!! She DRIVES Them BIG Bullets HARD The Rifle is Designed to Take it, I felt 110% Safe The 180 Grain Load i Originally planned to Go with in the Beginning of this Thread would have been NO PROBLEM.
What you guy’s didn’t see is the 1st Shot with 150 Grains of Powder, That Velocity was 1,577 FPS, And 170 Grains of Swiss 3F Gave 1,670 FPS, SO 20 extra Grains of Powder gave me 100 Extra FPS
This 170 Grain Swiss 3F Load is NO SLOUCH! When you can Push a 540 Grain .58 Cal Slug Right at 1,700 Fps Delivering 3,345 Ft lbs of Energy, That’s an ATTENTION GRABBER
